Javascript (for safari on iphone) popstate doesn't work with pushstate

I've found countless answers on using pushstate and popstate. I'm not trying to figure out how to use them. In my testing, these functions work fine on android.
Specifically on iphone using safari, the popstate event is not called if the window.history.pushState() function was used to push the url for the current "page". The popstate IS getting called if the pushState() was not used (hitting back from a normal page load).
My question is, has anyone found a workaround for this or is there a way to get it to work on iphone?
