NewsFlash: 9:02 a.m. (New comments below)

Luis Silva, one of the most well-known and prolific songwriters in the history of Tejano music passed away Wednesday night in Dallas. He was 64.

(Check back or refresh for continuing updates)

SilvaLuisLovingDavid032807 220.JPGAccording to San Antonio-based ASCAP TX Latin representative Velia Gonzalez, "Luis Silva  died last night in Dallas at his daughter's home around 7 p.m. He was in Houston on business Tuesday and passed on to Dallas to visit with his daughter Laura where he was having dinner. Apparently, a heart attack instantly killed him."

His sister-in-law Juanita told us(9:45 a.m.)  the family is waiting for confirmation on the funeral services and we will post here as soon as officials release the details. Meanwhile comments have started to pour in and we will also post them below as the morning progresses.

"I am deeply sadden by the loss of my friend & longtime ASCAP songwriter Luis Silva. I was privileged to have known him," said Velia Gonzalez, of ASCAP. "Not only was he an awesome songwriter, but he was extremely fun and always ready to entertain everyone with his jokes. Thank you Luis for always supporting me and ASCAP and for being so kind and thoughtful. We will miss you. You will continue to live with us through your music."

"Luis Silva shall live on forever -- because he lived the experience in the songs, lyrics and words he crafted," said Ruben S. Cubillos, cofounder/Executive Director VIVE Tejano, Inc. " His words championed the careers of the great groups to individual artists -- all touched by the talent of a true Tejano wordsmith. Luis was one of the last of a special breed of Tejano visionaries like - Manny Guerra, Bob Griever, Gibby Escobedo, Rudy Trevino, Manolo Gonzales..., the entire 'Rat Pack' of mavericks dedicated to contribute of their spirit on behalf of the Tejano culture. Young songwriters today have a footprint to follow and garner inspiration. His depth, storytelling content, and bubble gum hooks have set a high standard for generations to come, until we meet again."

According to Rose, his common-law wife of many years, Silva's birthday was coming up on Nov. 5. He was born in San Antonio in 1943 and attended Fox Tech High School.

While many industry people knew Silva as a serious, dedicated professional, personally he was easygoing, said Rose.

"He had a great sense of humor, he had an outgoing personality," she said.

Luis Silva Jr, who lives in Phoenix, said he will remember his father as a "kind and loving man  who always took time to spend with his family.

"Every sporting event, every competition in school he was there for us," he said.

In a decades-long career, Luis Silva was undoubtedly one of the most influential and prolific songwriters and record label promoters in Tejano music history. There have been quite a few notable Tex-Mex songwriters - Homer Hernandez, Pete Astudillo, Salome Guiterrez, Daniel Garcez, Marvin Palacios, Jorge Ramirez, Juan H. Barron, Angel Garrido, etc, but few wrote as many hits as Luis Silva during Tejano's rise.

Luis Silva wrote many hits for several top Tejano artists including Ramiro Herrera, Mazz, La Mafia, David Marez and others. His hits included "Boulevard de Suenos" (Fama), "Te Voy a ensenar a Querer," (Gary Hobbs)"Entre mas Lejos me Vaya," (David Marez), "Borracho de Besos," (La Fiebre); "Laura Ya No Vive Aqui," "Ahora Quiero que me Quieras," "Ayer y Hoy," "No quiero Olvidarte Otra Vez," (Mazz). Silva also wrote the song "Somos Hermanos," for the historic 1985 Tejanos for Hunger Aid CD project.

Cara Records CD.jpgI first met Silva and Bob Grever in 1985 when I began covering the music industry. Back then, the San Antonio-based Cara Records was indeed the Motown of Tejano music. The label, run by Grever, had all the top talent, the producers, the songwriters (Luis Silva was the main songwriter), the studio and the rest of the industry machinery needed to push Tejano into the higher echelons.

(Right, one of the first Cara Records CDs from the late '80s)

In early 1989, in an unprecedented move, Grever sold his Cara Records label to EMI Latin, then run by the legendary Jose Bejar. That began a furious record label war in the Southwest between EMI, Sony Records and other labels and sparked the huge Tejano revolution that unfolded in the '90s.

Luis Silva then worked for a lengthy series of record labels, continuing his radio promotions and his songwriting.

Silva was one of those deeply knowledgeable individuals I trusted and often turned to. Of course, Luis Silva could sometimes come off as a self-promoter but you couldn't fault Luis SIlva for occasionally being a little egocentric in boasting about his top songs or his royalties. All artists, composers and songwriters need a bigger-than-life ego to survive in this tough market.

But on a personal level Luis was friendly and affable. We kept in touch regularly and in frequent lunches, we exchanged updates on our personal lives and families. He always spoke proudly of his son Luis Jr., and his daughter Laura.

SilvaLuisLovingDavid032807 308.JPGSilva was also instrumental during Tejano's mid-80s slow rise as he, along with Cara Records owner Bob Grever in discovering new talent in such groups as La Mafia and Mazz. Silva was also part of the pioneers who helped launch the massive Tejano renaissance in the early '90s when Emilio and Selena led the genre into new heights.

(At right, Luis Silva visits with KWEX-TV's David Loving (left) in a reception before his induction into the Premios Hall of Fame.)

We tried to reach Bob Grever for comment but we were told by his representative here, Betsy Escovedo, that he was in Mexico and unavailable.

In 2007, Silva was inducted into the Premios a La Musica Latina Hall of Fame. Through the years Silva won a dozen awards for his songs and his lifetime of contributions to music, including several songwriter of the year honors during the late '80s and early '90s Tejano Music Awards.

"Luis Silva was the most successful songwriter - talent scout - promoter we ever had in the Tejano Music Industry. He was very proud to follow the steps of his famous movie star and aunt Lupe Velez, who was a Hollywood-broadway star in the 1930's, she filmed 46 films in her 17 career and was married to Olympic athlete Johnny Weissmuller (of 'Tarzan' fame).

VelezLupe260px-Lupe_Velez_in_Laughing_Boy_trailer_2.jpg

"Luis SIlva discovered some the most important icons in our music, such as La Mafia, Grupo Mazz, Eddie Gonzalez, and many more. He was also in charge in promotions for famous international recording artists such as; Vickki Carr, Ana Gabriel, Vicente Fernandez; to name a few.

"Luis Silva started his own recording company Silva Entertainment, where he was associated with Noe Cuellar Gonzalez, a Nuevo Laredo Radio Station owner. At Silva Entertainment he released albums for Pio Trevino & Magic, Ellysia Marie, Chalo Campos, Juan Garza & los Inquietos and many more.

"Luis was a close friend for all of us who have been seriously devoted to our industry, and was a major contributor with his songwriting. His songs sold millions of copies across Mexico, USA and Europe, some of the most famous song he ever wrote were: Borracho de Besos, Aunque mas Lejos me Vaya, Laura Ya No esta Aqui and many more. He composed over 400 songs and was one of the most successful songwriters of Tejano Music of all times.

"I was shocked, saddened and in disbelief when I heard that Luis had passed away. My heartfelt condolences and sympathy go to his loved ones.. I met Luis back in the late eighties. And while I cannot say that Luis and I were close friends, we did talk whenever we crossed paths. Nonetheless, I had much respect for his accomplishments.

"In his relatively short time as a composer, Luis had a very successful run and a very envious musical career. To many of us "old guys" in the business of songwriting and who have been at it for fifty years or more, Luis was thought of as "new on the block." Over the years, I would hear criticism from "learned" songwriters that he wasn't a "real" musician and didn't know how to read or write music.

"But whether this was true or not, it never mattered. Because as the saying goes, "good, bad or indifferent it's indisputable that he was very successful with his songs and that he had a very good talent for the type of lyrics and style of melodies he composed. And, truth be told, most songwriters don't write for other songwriters. We write for our own souls and for the enjoyment and appreciation of the public!
"And with all honesty and with much due respect, Luis had more hits in a shorter period of time than many of us. How good were they? Will they stand the test of time? Will they still be around and covered by other artists NOT in the Tejano genre' fifty years from now? Only time will tell. Could be, after all there are people out there with different tastes in music than those of other songwriters.
"On one of those rare times that we talked, I recall telling Luis that there will always be those that will criticize, out of envy, jealousy or plain old meanness. But that's their problem. And at the end of the day, there's no denying that during that period in Tejano's heyday, from the mid 80's to the mid 90's, his songs helped propel many a rising artist to fame. Q.E.P.D, amigo."

"I was in shock when I received the phone call that Luis had passed.  The only thing that came to mind was I had just seen him 2 months ago and then I was speechless.
"I had the honor of sitting with Luis Silva during the All Stars Tribute to Jerry DeLaRosa. I had met Luis at different events with my late husband Jerry DeLaRosa. When Jerry would chat with Luis there was always a joke or two and non stop laughter and they would always say to each other "lets see when we can go to lunch."  I know Jerry and Luis are sharing their ideas once again in a better place.= ) .My condolences go out to the entire Silva family.

"I was shocked when I heard the knews about Luis. He was a very good uncle and funny too. He would always make me and my kids laugh. The last time I saw him was at my sons birthday party. He came for a while and brought over a present for my son. Every time he saw me he would always say,"So how's the new future manager at Ross doing?" He would always joke around like that. He was great. My condolences go out to the Silva Family. I can't stress enough how great of a person he was. He will live on through his music. We love you Luis! God Bless You! Your niece and family."

"What a loss, I am deeply saddened that we will no longer have  The Great Luis Silva around to brighten our lives. Here was a man who could light up a room just by walking in, his achievements were many as all who have ever heard of him know, but his greatest accomplishments were his beloved children, so to them and all of his relatives our deepest condolences. I never imagined having spoken with him just a few days ago that I would be writting this. Luis loved his family his friends and his work. He was alway proud to talk about all three especially his kids and grand kids, and he always asked about your family. "On behalf of Grupo Vizion, we would like to send our deepest sympathies to la familia Silva on the passing of Mr. Luis Silva. We had the opportunity to work with him back in 1995 when we were part of a different band named La Fiera from Angleton Tx. A little humor about Mr. Silva. I remember being in the studio working on some vocal tracks with our lead singer and our producer Alex Montez. Alex had us all hyped up because Luis was coming down for our session from either San Antonio, or Dallas, or the valley. When Luis showed up we all went to dinner to talk about our project and then headed back to the studio to start recording our vocals on the songs he wrote for us. By the first 2 songs Luis was doing fine, coaching us and helping us with how he wanted some of the words to be pronounced. By the 3rd, 4th, and 5th songs he started dozing off due to his long trip in followed by an awesome dinner. Anyway, Alex would signal to us to see Mr. Silva asleep with the headphones on and he had a mic next to him so he could coach us. Alex would turn his mic up loud and even put effect on it so we could hear the snoring on the headphones. Well needless to say everytime he did that, Mr. Silva woke his own self saying what the hell is that, and we would bust out laughing every time and finally tell him. We never let him live that down. That was just one of MANY memories we shared with Mr. Silva. He will truly be missed by ALL who of us who knew him or of him. Rest in peace."

"Hola queridos amigos.  My name is Albert Calvo.  I share with you the sadness at the loss of our dear friend, Luis Silva.  Too bad we have lost Luis, at such a young age.  He had so much more to share.
"His love, and legacy will live in our hearts for as long as we live.  I thank Luis for giving me a very valuable, unforgettable recommendation to help start my radio career as the first Tejano announcer to work at KCOR Spanish radio in 1981...Luis helped launch my profession...a
successful career in broadcasting, which has spanned more than 30 years. Luis was so kind, and helpful to me, and countless others.  Luis, I will miss you, dearly, my brother. Love,"
Albert Calvo

"Working with Bob Gallarza and Jorge Moreno, I was privileged to be invited a few times to the lunch meetings in San Antonio with Luis Silva, Jorge Flores, Chano Elizondo, and Margo Morones. These veterans and business leaders of the Tejano industry would get together to talk about what is happening within the music industry. Many times they would play around and tease Luis about different items. Luis would always mention that he had a number one song in Italy that was originally sung by Mazz and that he received some big royalties from that song. So the guys would try to make Luis pay the bill every time he told that story.
"His biggest hit not necessarily my favorite was "Boracho de Besos" sung by La Fiebre.
His biggest contribution is that he wrote his songs for Tejano bands for Tejano fans. He will have his place in history as the premiere Tejano song writer. He was very proud of his work and he loved the artists who interpreted his songs. God Bless,"
DJ Jumpin Jess, J Latin Entertainment, Events, DJs, Mariachis, Marketing and Promotions

"I just heard the tragic news about Luis Silva. It's very sad to lose a great man who was an icon in the tejano music. He will be greatly missed... The first time we met, it was after mass at St. Anthony de Padua. He went to mass everyday. Even when he was out of town, he went to mass. Luis loved our heavenly Father and the Virgin a great deal and his faith was deep. Luis is probably overwhelmed with joy at returning to God the Almighty. May Godspeed the healing of Luis's family. Into Your hands Lord, I commend the spirit of Luis Silva."

Martha Anita

"I am most thankful to Luis Sílva for believing in me and giving me my first break as a record promoter when he took care of the cost to drive to California to promote some Cara Records artists during the middle 1980s and I was trying to find my niche in the Tejano music market. By then I was already aware that he was writing hits for about 80 percent of la creme de le creme in the Tejano market since Cara had La Mafia, Mazz, David Lee Garza, Joe Posada, David Marez, Ram Herrera and countless of others on their roster. To make a point, he wrote 46 songs for Mazz and the award winning songwriter was as famous as the bands."

Ramon Hernandez, historian

"My deepest condolences to the Silva Family. I met Luis many years ago at various industry functions. I got to know him a little better recently and spend a little time with him as he had been working with our new label Navarro Music as a promotion man for Jorge Meza in Mexico. Luis would have begun pre-production on an upcoming release by our artist Brandon which he would have done us the honor to produce for Fonovisa.

"I had just seen him at the Billboard Regional Mexican Summit in LA, and had spoken to him by phone just a few days ago. Navarro Music, and the entire Latin and Tejano music industry has lost a great gentleman whom we were lucky to have do some work for us. I always found value in his counsel and enthusiasm regarding our projects, music in general, and life itself. He will be greatly missed. We have lost a great friend. Q.E.P.D. Luis Silva."

"My dear brother in law, I am going to miss you you so very much.I always admired that being extremely successful, you never asked for special attention,or spoke much of your achievements & honors.I for the better part of 20 yrs.came to know a side of you not very many knew. A mentor and friend to those in need of guidance,a very religous man praying the
rosary every night, who went to church every Sunday and made contributions. Our birthdays and holidays, backyard bar-b-que's will never be the same.I will continue to bake your favorite chocolate cake on your birthday as you asked for.May you rest in peace."

"I had the pleasure of first meeting Luís Silva when I began to wet my feet in this industry over 20 years ago.  Although Luís was a successful and well known composer, after meeting and getting to know him, it was refreshing to realize that he was a regular person.  Luís always had a kind word, a good joke and a positive outlook on life.
"Amongst the many times shared with Luís, I'll always fondly remember a group of us going with Luís to Tommy Burger in L.A. where he turned us on to Tommy's famous chili cheeseburger and cheese fries.  We all wound up having Rolaids for desert, but that's alright because we were hanging out with Luís.
"Luís always spoke glowingly about his son, daughter and grandchildren with great admiration and love.  I know that he cared deeply about his family.
"Your friendship was as big, if not bigger, than your great personality and you were truly a "One Man Show" in every sense of the word.  I'll miss those occasional phone calls from you big guy.  I will always be proud for having had the opportunity to have known you and to have counted you as one of my friends.  You will be missed.  Rest In Peace Querido Luisito."
Ernie Napoleoni Director of Operations SGAE NY

Oct 30, 2008
"I consider Luis Silva a friend.  We hadn't seen each other in years, but a couple of months ago, I called him just to see if he was still at the same telephone and to check in on him.  He was the same Luis I had spent some time with back in 2002, when he was on the Freddie Records staff.  He was a good guy to travel with, especially when he was on an expense account.  There was no one better to spend time with on the blacktop than Luis Silva.  He drove a nice car and his stories were interesting, never-ending and never boring.  He also knew all the best restaurants - the ones locals go to because of their good food.
"At the time Luis Silva was the National Marketing Director at Freddie Records.  He had been in the marketing business for 30 years and worked for a number of labels, some large and prominent, some not well known at all.  Still others have been out of business for years.  He worked with pros like Manny Guerra, Bob Grever, and Manolo Gonzalez, all movers and shakers at different labels.  But Luis seemed genuinely comfortable and happy working in the Freddie Records organization. I remember him specifically discussing Freddie Records' success at the Grammys.  At the time the competition was up in arms because Freddie was grabbing Grammys left and right while other bigger and more prominent labels stood by and wondered how. I pulled out this Luis Silva quote from my notes: "Every year I hear the same story from competing labels.  'We are not going to let Freddie do it to us this year.'  Guess what, during the time the nomination process is playing out, they don't have time to do the things that have to get done because they are too busy doing other things. So they miss deadlines, forget to turn in their ballots and what have you. Freddie Records takes care of business that way, and you can see the results," he said.   I think Luis was right on the money on that one.
"Luis Silva wrote hundreds of songs.  Many of those songs have been recorded by La Mafia, Mazz, La Fiebre and other well known names in Tejano Music. But my favorite, and the one that produces a big bulk of the royalties that result from Silva's creations comes from one tune: "Borracho De Besos," a tune from a 1991 album by La Fiebre.
"The Tejano music circle is a small one, almost like a brotherhood.  Everyone knows most everyone else and what they're up to.  As competitors, they're out to out-perform each other, but there's admiration when one of them does well.  I think Luis Silva did well.  Better than well, even, and I think many his peers admire him for that."
Rene Cabrera, freelance writer

"Luis,
I'm going to miss you. You are one of a kind. You touched so many people not only with your music but with your soul. Godspeed my brother. Luz y progreso."

Hola queridos amigos. My name is Albert Calvo. I share with you the sadness at the loss of our dear friend, Luis Silva. Too bad we have lost Luis, at such a young age. He had so much more to share.

His love, and legacy will live in our hearts for as long as we live. I thank Luis for giving me a very valuable, unforgettable recommendation to help start my radio career as the first Tejano announcer to work at KCOR Spanish radio in 1981...Luis helped launch my profession...a successfull career in broacasting, which has spanned more than 30 years.

Luis was so kind, and helpful to me, and countless others. Luis, I will miss you, dearly, my brother.

Love,

Albert Calvo

My dear brother in law,I am going to miss you you so very much.I always admired that being extremely sucessful, you never asked for special attention,or spoke much of your achievements & honors.I for the better part of 20 yrs.came to know a side of you not very many knew.A mentor and friend to those in need of guidance,a very religous man praying the rosary every night, who went to church every Sunday and made contributions. Our birthdays and holidays, backyard bar-b-que's will never be the same.I will continue to bake your favorite chocolate cake on your birthday as you asked for.May you rest in peace .

I was shocked when I heard the knews about Luis. Your niece and family.

I spoke with Luis Silva re:a new production for Navarro Records Tues 10/21..It is amazing to me that this could has happen soo quickly. Luis had sooo much energy & sooo many ideas, that his spirit is silenced en un segundo is tooo hard for me to comprehend..His Music will never die, But the world has lost a Great man much too sooon.

Rest in Peace my Friend
